Cats is an award-winning musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The story is based on a collection of poems by T. S. Eliot, titled Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. The musical tells the story of the Jellicles, a tribe of cats. Together, these felines decide which creature will go to the Heaviside layer and live a new life. The ritual or song number in selecting which cat can ascend to the coveted rebirthing is called the “Jellicle choice.”

The musical first opened in London’s West End in May 1981. One year later, the musical opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theater. The original creative team consists of award-winning director Trevor Nunn and choreographer Gillian Lynne, whose credits include the Phantom of the Opera, Cabaret, Gigi, and more. The production in London ran for over two decades, while the one on Broadway thrived for 18 years. Cats is recorded to be the fourth longest-running Broadway show in history and became one of the highest-grossing musicals in the U.S., with $3.5 billion in sales as of 2012.

This groundbreaking musical has won numerous accolades. In 1981, Cats won two of London’s West Ends most prestigious awards, the Laurence Olivier Awards. Meanwhile, in the U.S., Cats took home seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Apart from the Tonys, Cats also won three Drama Desk Awards, a Grammy Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award. The musical has also garnered rave reviews from critics. Robert Feldberg from the Northjersey.com mentioned that Cats is “kitschy and fun, sometimes quite touching, and marvelously well done. It’ll likely be very nostalgic for anyone who saw the show before, and, I’m guessing, a treat for people who haven’t, and don’t go expecting a profound theatrical experience.”

This 2022, a new generation of Cats will be introduced to the audience. The musical, directed by Trevor Nunn, will feature the original score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the original scenic and costume design by John Napier.
