Travel back in time to early 19th-century France, and meet Jean Valjean, a French peasant who has just served nineteen years in prison for stealing a single loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. Well, enough is enough! Valjean breaks his parole and is swept up with the entire cast into the revolution, him and a group of young idealists attempt to overthrow the government at a street barricade in Paris., Vive la révolution! But life is never so easy, throughout the show Valjean is ruthlessly pursued by the fanatical Police Inspector Javert who refuses to let him escape justice. Throughout the story, scenes are shared with the downtrodden and destitute, depicting the appalling social conditions under the provisional French monarchy. Fueled by rage and fired by wholesale suffering, the narrative of Les Miz is about as dark as it gets in musical theater.

Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Les Misérables is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg and is based on the novel by Victor Hugo. It has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, additional material by James Fenton and adaptation by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. Orchestrations are by Stephen Metcalfe, Christopher Jahnke and Stephen Brooker with original orchestrations by John Cameron. The production is directed by James Powell and Laurence Connor, designed by Matt Kinley inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, with costumes by Andreane Neofitou and Christine Rowland, lighting by Paule Constable, sound by Mick Potter, musical staging by Michael Ashcroft and Geoffrey Garratt, and music supervision by Stephen Brooker and James Moore.

The original French pronunciation premiered in Paris in 1980 with direction by Robert Hossein. Its English-language adaptation by producer Cameron Mackintosh has been running in London since October 1985, making it the longest-running musical in the West End and the second longest-running musical in the world after the original Off-Broadway run of The Fantasticks. The original 1985 production won a Laurence Olivier Award while the 1987 Broadway production won Eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, from twelve nominations and five Drama Desk Awards from seven nominations, the 25th anniversary revival show won the Laurence Olivier Audience Award twice in 2012 and 2014 as well as multiple awards in both Canada and Australia.

This new production of Les Misérables was first conceived in 2009 to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary and has taken the world by storm, continuing to enjoy record-breaking runs in countries including North America, Australia, Japan, Korea, France, and Spain. The North American production relaunched its national tour in 2017 but was halted in March 2020 due to the global pandemic.

“Les Misérables” is back, and those irreverent satirists at Forbidden Broadway must be licking their chops. There’s no clunky turntable to mock in this reverential revival of the barnburner musical that Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg shrewdly fashioned from the classic Victor Hugo novel, which ran for 16 years on Broadway. But those excitable French revolutionaries are still storming the barricades, marching in place, and singing at the top of their lungs. And unlike the tentative 2006 revival, this one is a solid piece of theatrical architecture, built to survive every critical arrow shot through its heart.
