Les Miserables at Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis

In 1980, history was being made when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil wrote the very first musical screenplay for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (previously in French). Created from Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the matching title, Les Mis was modified into a live stage adaptation as a show only sung from start to finish, which was monumental in that decade.

After an initial showing in Paris, there was evidently a growing demand to produce an English show, and once Cameron Macikintosh discovered the soundtrack, he instantly fell in love and agreed to create an English adaptation while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the new songs. The English staging of Les Mis at first debuted with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its impressive success and repeatedly sold-out shows, it quickly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, London theatre's top theater, and was performed for 19 years. The West End play then transferred once again to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and maintains its shows up until present day. Counting all its runs since its creation four decades ago, Les Misérables is statistically the longest-running musical in the entire world.

With almost 40 years in London's West End alone and not even listing its productions in foreign locations, including its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is with certainty that Les Mis endures and is incredible in the viewpoint of the play's audiences. The plot and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around redemption, sacrifice, and unrequited love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings due to the evident emotion beneath the surface of each character and act presented. Les Misérables has become so successful that it has been adapted to motion pictures several times and gained loyal fanbases even on a separate platform.
