Originating from Broadway, it’s time for Minnesota to fall in love with theatre again as the musical comedy Book of Mormon will be touring in Minneapolis at Orpheum Theatre on Saturday 14th December 2024.
The comedic and sometimes rude and crude musical Book of Mormon centers around of two Mormon Elders in training to become missionaries – Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, who are tasked with a mission to a remote village in Uganda to convert its residents. The Broadway show deliberately satirizes faith in general through the eyes of the pair, as Cunningham comes up with fact mixed with fiction to teach religion to the locals.
The Book of Mormon was created by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, the same creators of the animated TV series South Park and the Broadway play Avenue Q.

Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham are two coming of age Mormon missionaries tasked with a mission to a native Ugandan village. Their goal is to convert the villagers to their faith, but they find out upon their arrival that their job is more complex than they had imagined, given the pile of local issues that the villagers are against such as a local warlord, an HIV/AIDS epidemic, and poverty among others. The pair then gradually realize that they must utilize more unique ways to get through to the locals than the traditional method that they know.
It is in the pair’s unique dynamic where the performance of The Book of Mormon excels – allowing the subject matter of religion to be blasphemed and made fun of with comedy, showtunes, and a bit of rude language, yet still remaining acceptable to the general public. Since its debut in 2011, the Broadway play has been received positively despite its manner of challenging religious belief. The church itself supported the musical, purchasing ads and releasing slogans specifically that stated: “You’ve seen the play, now read the book.” In its West End productions, the repeatedly sold-out shows were prime examples of The Book of Mormon’s success. Theatre goers were already drawn in given the content and theme of the play, according to The Guardian, it was even to their shock that “suddenly you realize you’re in for not just humour but a seriously fine night of entertainment, and it just keeps on getting better.” The musical’s run in Australia just as successful, with the Sydney Morning Herald even declaring that the Book of Mormon is a “dynamite production of a show that can lay fair claim to being the funniest Broadway musical of all time.”
It's no shock that due to its success, The Book of Mormon’s several productions globally have earned it nine Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, three Outer Circle Critics awards, four Olivier Awards, and two Helpmann Awards.
This upbeat, happy, and totally silly play continues its tour in Minnesota. Minneapolis’s top theatre venue, Orpheum Theatre, with its spacious seating capacity, outstanding lighting, and magical sound system will be hosting this December’s performance of The Book of Mormon.
