& Juliet at Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis

Set side by side with the former storyline of Romeo & Juliet which debuted on stage around four hundred years prior, fans have distinguished the considerable alterations that had been applied to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer musical based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original narrative centers around the tragedy that comes about because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic tale and instead pursues a more positive outlook by concentrating on the endless possibilities of life, even after such harrowing experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new musicall’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her group of friends, who travel to Paris to discover their identities not just as individuals, but as remarkable women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist flip through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes the reigns of her husband’s account and changes the ending of his well-known classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while inviting new and equally powerful women to the stage. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the play is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent generations, that highlight the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading ladies throughout the production. Even the costumes worn by the production’s characters give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while showing the contrast between the new musical and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan attire and iconography with today’s attire styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to symbolize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This May’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it opening in Minnesota, where Minneapolis's Orpheum Theatre is proud to feature this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Friday 16th May 2025.
