Then in 1995, Gregory McGuire would author and publish Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The arousing volume would be the basis of Wicked, the Broadway show we’ve come to know and love.

The plot follows Elphaba, the adulterine daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her family and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the highly regarded Shiz University, where she rooms with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites don't take to each other at first but soon befriend.
After a while, things go downhill when Elphaba notices heinous crimes against the Animals, a sentient race often tormented by oppressive forces. Galinda and Elphaba go to the Wizard for help, but the Wizard unfortunately offers little assistance. A let-down Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for justice for the Animals, leaving Galinda and her studies at Shiz University behind.
Meanwhile, Galinda - known as Glinda - climbs the social ladder, marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an socialite lifestyle. Elphaba returns and accidently earns Fiyero’s admiration as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love blossom unburdened, or will Elphaba’s mission for justice push Fiyero away, and kill her?
Wicked kicked off its first live performance 20 years ago at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it broke into new locations year after year, achieving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia.
