& Juliet at Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis

Set side by side with the original storyline of Romeo & Juliet which was presented on stage approximately four hundred years earlier, fans have noted the considerable changes which were made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer show based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original premise centers around the tragedy that occurs because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead pursues a more positive outlook by focusing on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such agonizing experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who make the trip to Paris and find their identities not just as individuals, but as powerful women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist perspective through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes control of her husband’s tale and changes the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while inviting new and equally talented women to the stage. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the musical is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent generations, that highlight the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the show. Even the dresses worn by the production’s cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while conveying the contrast between the ongoing show and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan attire and iconography with today’s costume styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to illustrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This May’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it come to Minnesota, where Orpheum Theatre of Minneapolis is proud to be hosting this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Thursday 15th May 2025. Known in the entire Minnesota area by locals as the favorite venue for staged musical's, Orpheum Theatre is a large theater with a huge seating capacity while having the most epic architecture both inside and outside the venue.
