When compared to the previous plot of the Shakespearean play which was presented live on stage roughly forty decades earlier, fans have distinguished the many modifications that were made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern musical based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original drama is based around the tragic events that transpires because of rash decision-making and the unbridled passion of two lovers, which results in the poisoning of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead embraces a more positive outlook by embracing on the limitless possibilities of life, even after such traumatic experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new musicall’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her group of friends, who head to Paris to discover their identities not just as individuals, but as strong women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes hold of her husband’s narrative and changes the ending of his famous classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while bringing in new and equally confident women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the production is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent generations, that exemplify the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the musical. Even the fashion worn by the musical’s ladies give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while conveying the contrast between the ongoing show and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan clothing and iconography with today’s attire styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to illustrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
This May’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it arrive in Minnesota, where Orpheum Theatre of Minneapolis is proud to be hosting this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Saturday 17th May 2025.
