In 1980, a star show was born when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil prepared the very first musical script for Les Misérables (originally in French). Created from Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same title, Les Mis was adapted into a live stage adaptation performed as a show only sung from start to finish, which was an enormous achievement in that era.

After a limited season performed in French in Paris, there was evidently great clamor to create an English adaptation, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the musical score, he was so inspired and announced he was going to write an English adaptation hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the translated songs. The English production of Les Misérables only performed with a two-month run at the Barbican Centre, but because of its astounding success and positive reviews from critics, it unsurprisingly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and premier venue, and ran for almost 20 years. Les Mis then moved once more to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and carries on with its shows up until today. Adding together all its tours since its inception four decades ago, the stage adaptation of Les Mis is actually the longest-running stage play of all time.

With 37 years in London's West End alone and not even counting its tours in international cities, including its sold-out shows on Broadway, it is undeniable that Les Misérables endures and is unforgettable in the perspective of the show's fanbase. The storyline and the epic musical score, which revolves around justice, passion, and unrequited love, elevates the musical's quality due to the apparent passion behind each song and act performed. Les Mis has become so critically-acclaimed that the play has been converted to motion pictures numerous times and received very positively even on a different platform.

This approaching November’s production of Les Mis brings it to Minnesota, where the show will be hosted on Thursday 21st November 2024, in Orpheum Theatre, Minneapolis. For an auditory experience like Les Misérables, theatergoers are sure that Orpheum Theatre is the unrivaled choice because of its sound design and acoustics, in addition to a magnificent stage platform to have the musical.
