In the middle of social and political discontent in the historic 19th century French Revolution, a convicted lawbreaker known by the name of Jean Valjean severs his parole after nineteen years imprisoned. Because of the actions of a good samaritan, Jean Valjean is able to fully escape the law and creates a brand new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, ultimately attaining the positions of a factory owner and a mayor. Though initially fortunate in evading the law and his nemesis Javert, he is unfortunately pulled in the dangerous political landscape of Paris, France, wherein he is compelled to find solutions that would change the lives of the people around him forever.
This narrative of Les Misérables, full of sacrifice and passion, has been running for several decades in a number of locations in a considerable number of cities globally. Since its premiere in its home of Paris in the late 1900s, it has secured its place not just as one of the most smashing musicals of this generation, but also part of the most-awarded musicals too. In 1987 on its own, it swept the nominations and awards of the Tonys, with 12 nominations in total and 8 wins. The musical secured awards as Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actor and Actress in a Musical, Best Scenic Design, and Best Lighting Design.
