In 1980, history was being made when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil wrote the initial play script for Les Misérables (initially in the French language). Based on Victor Hugo’s late novel of the same title, the plot of Les Mis was transformed into a theater play as a fully sung-through show, which was an enormous achievement in that time period.
After a limited season performed in French in Paris, there was evidently great clamor to produce an English show, and once Cameron Macikintosh discovered the soundtrack, he was so inspired and announced he was going to create an English version in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the new songs. The English staging of the musical at first performed with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but because of its astounding success and larger audience with the English version, the show rapidly transferred to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and superior venue, and was performed for 19 years. Les Mis then moved once more to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until today. If you include all its runs since its inception in 1980, the stage adaptation of Les Mis is as it happens, the longest-running musical in the entire world.
With almost 40 years in London's West End solely and not even counting its productions in international locations, including its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is incontrovertible that Les Mis perseveres and is excellent in the eyes of the show's fanbase. The plot and the epic musical score, which revolves around redemption, sacrifice, and unrequited love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings because of the revealed passion behind the mask of each character and act staged. Les Misérables has become so famous that the play has been adapted to motion pictures numerous times and gained loyal fanbases even on another platform.
This approaching November’s run of Les Misérables brings it to Minnesota, where the show will be performed on Friday 29th November 2024, in Orpheum Theatre, Minneapolis.
