Occurring specifically in the time span in the middle of the Rebellion of 1832 in Paris, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a resident of France who was sentenced for 19 years because of a small act of theft for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he breaks free and looks for redemption as an honest man; Jean Valjean then takes on a brand new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, while still protecting his newfound lifestyle and avoiding Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and determined to catch and bring Jean Valjean to justice.
Taking place over a duration of almost twenty years covered by its two acts, Valjean becomes involved in one way or another with a few key figures throughout Les Mis – Fantine is one of Monsieur Madeleine’s factory laborers who gives birth to an illegitimate infant; Cosette is the adoptive baby of Jean Valjean, who turns out to be Fantine’s infant; Marius, a young local fighting for the rebellion and the destined love match of Cosette. Other characters seen in the play consist of the Thénardiers, abusive proprietors who think only of themselves and are engrossed with making profit by all means; Eponine, their daughter, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and members of the rebellion specifically Gavroche, a young but resourceful orphan, and the opposition’s leader, Enjolras.
This diverse cast of characters who meet by fate and their unique stories are presented beautifully on a live platform, not just with the show's 1800s French-based costume and prop design, but distinctly with Les Misérables being sung-through fully from the first to last line of the play. With iconic songs including “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as part of its amazing score, Les Mis is able to communicate the real and unmasked personalities beneath each character that comes to life on stage.
