A story that’s more than 2000 years old yet still captivates people today is coming to the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis for a two-night stopper. The Thorn, the play about the Passion of the Christ, will hold its first show on Wednesday, October 9th. While some of the scenes are certainly impactful, this is a family-friendly experience that can not only ensure you have a good time, but perhaps spark certain thoughts. This depiction of the passion and resurrection of Jesus dives into supernatural themes that you may not see illustrated in the many movies and even theater productions that have used the story as a focal point.

Apart from the obvious religious themes, The Thorn has evolved so much over the years that it is now a Broadway-worthy production. In fact, the recent movie that depicts many of the scenes from the live show proves this. If you’re looking for a faith encounter with a mix of professional theatrics, this is the best show in town for that. If you’re expecting to see a very traditional rendition of the Passion of the Christ on stage, you're probably going to be disappointed. That’s not because there’s an issue with the show. On the contrary, the focus of the play is to try and provide a more supernatural view of what took place on Mt Golgotha. It’s done so through acrobatic acts and dances that depict battles taking place in the spiritual realm. When you look into the origin story of The Thorn, it makes a lot of sense. John Bolin, the creator, was trying to put on a small skit to preach about the crucifixion for his church. According to Bolin, these first few efforts were nothing like the live show that you’ll see at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis on October 9th.

The skit caught on with the local church, and Bolin actually had a bit of an ace up his sleeve that he used to transform the small production into a full-blown play. According to him, both of his parents were former actors. He turned to them to get some advice on how to expand the performance. Of course, from then to what we have taking the stage at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis, a lot of things happened. Still, you could say that the rest is history. The original play was meant for teens and college students, that’s why the visual aspects are overly enhanced. That led to the Broadway-worthy show that’s on display all over the country.

Great news: the entirety of the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis will be open for this Wednesday night show. The Thorn is known to sell out theaters all over the country, so that wasn’t too much of a surprise. If you want to be close to the action, the pit tickets are always the best bet. There are also decent options on the first rows of the balconies. Those spots give you more command of the entire show.
