Hairspray is a story about chasing your dreams and not giving up no matter who tries to bring you down! Such is the story of Tracy Turnblad, a lovable young girl who loves to dance. Tracy, a Baltimore high school student, quickly rushes home with her best friend Penny to watch their favorite program, the Corny Collins Show. The hit TV show recently announced that one of its council members will take a leave of absence for “nine months.” Hence, they will be holding auditions to replace her. Tracy and Penny become ecstatic and plan their next step for joining the auditions. Unfortunately, the girls don’t have the support of their mothers, as Tracy’s mom is afraid of her chubby daughter being ridiculed. Meanwhile, Penny and her mother argue about the audition. Nevertheless, Tracy gains the support of her father and excitedly pursues the auditions. Sadly, she meets an unpleasant producer who rejects her for being fat. Will Tracy ever fulfill her dream? Will she ever be on the show? Find out when you come to see Hairspray at the Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis!
The musical takes place in Baltimore. The music, written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman, is heavily influenced by ‘60s music. “It becomes unstoppably joyous. This works better for its uplifting message on female self-worth, but the upbeat mood on racial unity strikes a more dissonant note.” – Guardian.
