Synopsis

Parade follows the true story of Leo Frank in the early twentieth century. He and Lucille Frank are a newlywed Jewish couple who are struggling to make a life in the old red hills of Georgia. In 1913, Leo Frank was wrongfully accused and convicted of murdering a 13-year-old girl in Atlanta, Georgia. His trial, conviction and death brought national attention to the antisemitism arriving into the south, which led to the establishment of the Anti-Defamation League and the revival of the then-obsolete Ku Klux Klan. When he was accused of the unspeakable crime, it hurls them into an unimaginable test of faith, morality, justice, and loyalty. Compelling and wonderfully hopeful, Parade reminds audiences that to love, we must genuinely see one another.

“The story of Leo Frank is more important than ever to re-examine, and it is my hope that audiences are both inspired and activated to reflect on both the past failure and the enduring promise of the complicated tapestry we call America,” said director Michael Arden.

Creative Team

Parade features a book by two-time Tony Award® winner, Pulitzer Prize winner, and Academy Award® winner Alfred Uhry, music and lyrics by three-time Tony Award® winner Jason Robert Brown, and co-conceived by 21-time Tony Award®-winning icon Harold Prince. Michael Arden is returning to recreate his Tony Award-winning direction, working with his celebrated Broadway creative team, including the incredibly talented choreographers Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Cree Grant, music coordinator Kimberlee Wertz, scenic designer Dane Laffrey, costume designer Susan Hilferty, lighting designer Heather Gilbert, sound designer Jon Weston, projection designer Sven Ortel, and hair and wig designer Tom Watson.

Casting will again be coordinated by Telsey + Co’s Craig Burns. “Parade has been a seminal piece of theater for me as an artist since it premiered 25 years ago, and to be collaborating with this incredible group of producers, designers, and artists led by the brilliant Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond is truly a dream come true,” Michael Arden said. The cast for the upcoming North American tour is yet to be announced, so keep your eyes peeled! Parade showcased its final performance on Broadway in August 2023, with a cast that boasted Ben Platt, Micaela Diamond, Alex Joseph Grayson, Sean Allan Krill, Howard McGillin and Paul Alexander Nolan.

History and Awards

Originally directed by Harold Prince, the production premiered on Broadway back in 1998, winning as many as nine Tony nominations and winning two, for its compelling book and stunning score. In 2007, a major revision debuted at London’s Donmar Warehouse, which later arrived at Los Angeles’ Mark Taper Forum in 2009. The remake uses the revisions from the production’s London premiere. Michael Arden’s Parade started with a 2022 limited run at New York City Center. Most of that celebrated cast continued on with the Broadway transfer, such as Ben Platt as Leo Frank and Micaela Diamond as Lucille Frank. The remake snagged two well-deserved Tony Awards® in 2023, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Direction of a Musical for Arden.

Review

“Co-choreographers Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Cree Grant make the sweep of history move with grace and flair. Sven Ortel’s projections of vintage photographs of the actual characters, settings and headlines are a constant reminder of the real world and its actual history. This theatrically thrilling revival of “Parade” teaches lessons that still need to be learned from a wicked past that haunts us still.” – Variety
